Kids Eat Free

Encounter Church in Athens, along with East Smithfield Federated Church and the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is bringing a summer meals program, “Kids Eat Free” to Athens, Smithfield, Ridgebury and Ulster townships this summer  July 2-Aug. 17. Any child, age 18 and under – even if they are just visiting the area for the summer, is eligible to stop by one of three distribution centers and pick up a bagged lunch. Milk will also be available.

The distribution sites, purposely located in outlying areas, will be serving lunches on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the following times (please note the sites will be closed on Wednesday, July 4):

  • East Smithfield Federated Church, at the corner of Church and Main streets, East Smithfield, 12-1 p.m.

  • Larnard/Hornbrook Park, 1241 Hornbrook Rd., 12 -1 p.m.

  • Ridgebury Township Community Park, Berwick Turnpike, Bentley Creek, 12:30-1:30 p.m.

The Valley’s newest lunch program, “Kids Eat Free” is part of Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks which operates several summer food service programs during the summer that seek to close this gap between the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service program because of various barriers experienced only during the summer, including a lack of access to meal sites, insufficient program awareness, and limited resources when schools are closed.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is also accepting donations for the Summer Feeding program. For more information on how you can help, visit its website at www.centralpafoodbank.org
